The JEE or Joint Entrance Examination is an MCQ-based examination held in India for enrollment in several engineering institutes. The exam is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) formed the NTA under the Society Registration Act 1860 as an independent autonomous and self-sustaining premier testing organization for undertaking effective, straightforward, and global standards exams to evaluate applicants’ expertise for admissions to top-ranked higher education universities.

The JEE conducted by NTA comprises two papers. The first paper (JEE Main) is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E / B. Tech) at NITs, IIITs, other CFTIs, and Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments. There is also an eligibility test for the second paper (JEE Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs. The NTA is expected to conduct the JEE Main exam online mode, 2 times a year.

Number of Seats of Different Institutes

The MHRD established the Joint Seat Allocation (JoSAA) to oversee and control joint seat allocation for admissions to member institutes. 23 IITs, ISM, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and additional Government Funded Technical Institutes are included (Other GFTIs). Admission to these institutes’ academic programs is handled through a single exam.

  • 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) = 16234 Seats
  • 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) = 23997 Seats
  • 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) = 6146 Seats
  • 7 Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs) = 1734 Seats
  • 1 Indian Institute of Science (IISc) = 52 Seats
  • 3 Indian Statistical Institutes (ISIs) = 214 Seats

There are even more than 5 lac seats in 1000 state level colleges as well. Overall, through JEE, nearly 5.5 lakh seats are offered by 2500 institutions.

Important Dates You Need to Know (Main + Advanced)

Here is some important information such as the exam date, result declaration date, and more. Check out the tables below:

JEE Main –
JEE Advanced –

These were the dates when the exams are typically held. Exact dates can only be known after the release of the exam notification on NTA website.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE

Below are the eligibility criteria that students need to fulfill:

1. Age Limit

There is no upper age limit for applicants taking the JEE Main test. Candidates who completed the XII exam in 2021, and 2022, or are appearing in 2023, regardless of age, are eligible to sit for the JEE Main Examination – 2023. Candidates should ensure that they meet the eligibility and age restriction requirements of the institutes to which they wish to apply.

2. Qualifying Examination Year of Appearance

Only applicants who managed to qualify for their 12th class Examination or any equivalent qualification in 2021 or 2022, or those who are taking their Class 12th Examination or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2023, are eligible to take the JEE Main Examination in both January 2023 and April 2023. Candidates who completed the Class 12th /Qualifying examination in 2020 or earlier, as well as those who will take it in 2024 or later, will be ineligible to take JEE Main 2023.

3. The Number of Subjects in the Qualifying Examination

To be eligible for JEE Main 2023, applicants must have chosen a minimum of 5 subjects in class 12th/qualifying test. Students who have chosen 4 subjects are not allowed to appear in the JEE Main 2023, and if they appear in the JEE Main 2023 with false info, their rank/result will not be revealed.

In addition to the JEE score, the qualifying test is a Class 12th examination from any National/State or Approved International Board.

  • For IITs, ISM Dhanbad, NITs, IITs, and GFTIs, students must be in the top 20% of successful candidates in their Class 12th board or have at least 75% in their Class 12th board test, whichever is lower. SC, ST, and PwD applicants must have an overall score of at least 65%.

  • The following subjects’ marks will be used to calculate the percentage of qualifying examination marks for paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.): 1-Language, 3-Mathematics, 2-Physics 4-Any of the following (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject) 5-Any subject other than the four listed above.

  • Registration requires an Aadhar card. For further information on the entry requirements to the institutes, visit their website.

The Exam Structure of JEE (Main + Advanced)

The exam patterns of both Main and Advanced are different. Below is the detailed pattern of JEE Main, and an overview of JEE Advanced question pattern.

JEE Main –
JEE Advanced –

The JEE Advanced consists of two papers i.e.,

  • Paper-1

  • Paper-2

Each paper consists of three sections i.e.,

  • Section-1 Physics

  • Section-2 Mathematics

  • Section-3 Chemistry

The exact pattern and marking scheme of JEE Advanced can’t be predicted or stated as it varies every year. In general, straight objective type, multiple answer type, comprehension type, matrix match type & integer type questions were asked.

JEE Cut off – (Main + Advanced)

The cut off for both Main and Advanced are different. Below is the detailed pattern of JEE Main, and an overview of JEE Advanced cut off structure.

JEE Advanced –
The Bottom Line

Both the JEE Main and Advanced tests are regarded as among the most difficult in the country to pass. Only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers with the highest rank can take the JEE Advanced test. With that said, it is also evident that many of the qualifiers are average students. Only perseverance and consistency helped them crack one of the toughest exams.

Hence, it is all about a systematic way of study that can bring success to a student in these exams. Most students start their preparation from 11th standard, and some others start even earlier. Preferably, an experienced coaching institute, like Rathi’s Aspire Academy, can hugely impact this journey.
