Empowering Path to Future: Which Career Opportunities after 10th Is Beneficial?

Are you at the crossroads of choosing career opportunities after 10th grade? The decision to choose a career stream after the 10th grade is crucial and often influenced by vague presumptions or limited perspectives from friends and relatives. Rathi’s Aspire Academy (RAA) emphasizes the importance of professional career counselling, highlighting their expertise in guiding students toward the right path. In the blog, RAA shares a case study demonstrating how capable career counselling can turn the arrow of a student’s ambition in the right direction.

So, meet Priya (for privacy purposes we’re using made-up names), a very determined, stellar, and ambitious 10th grade student, who consistently ranked among the top three in her school. Her family background, consisting of Lawyers, Doctors, CA and Engineers, reflected a rich educational heritage in her family. With dreams of becoming an IAS officer, her future looked promising.

Her parents were highly educated and knew that knowing aptitude is important but knowing true interest and potential is critical for a successful life. They didn’t want to take chances in career opportunities after 10th that they couldn’t undo, so they planned a DMIT test at RAA.

The Counselling & The DMIT Revelation

RAA is a renowned institution known for providing genuine counselling services along with the most scientific intelligence test- the Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test (DMIT). You can find more about DMIT and our testimonials here.

Priya underwent the DMIT at RAA, which revealed her strong aptitude for linguistic skills, leadership, analytical abilities, and interpersonal skills. In personalized counselling sessions, RAA recognized Priya’s diplomatic and decision-making skills, integrity, and public service orientation, aligning well with an IAS career after 10th.

Despite the common belief that Arts is the ideal path for UPSC preparation, RAA challenged this notion, suggesting that choosing Science could lead to a higher success rate in cracking UPSC exams. The blog explores Priya’s journey as a case study, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right stream after the 10th exam for a successful civil services career.

First Things First: Why Science?

In today’s dynamic world, students often contemplate their career opportunities after 10th with a strategic mindset. It’s not uncommon for them to backtrack, choosing subjects that align with their future aspirations. Priya had IAS in her sights and, like many, she was planning 11th -12th Arts followed by BA or 5 yr. integrated BA LLB, LLB to keep a backup option.

Priya and her parents were of the opinion that Science doesn’t add value if one’s ultimate goal is IAS. Probably everyone knows that by opting Science stream, one can keep career options open for Arts or Commerce, whereas vice-versa isn’t possible. The question still remains – If one is clear that they want to become IAS then why should one choose Science?

Challenging the Arts Conundrum

Priya’s parents believed that Arts subjects were a direct gateway to success in IAS. However, when they sought our suggestions, RAA provided invaluable insights.

We pointed out that the 11th – 12th Arts curriculum is minimal, which can lead to less engagement and increased free time for the student, especially during the crucial teenage years. The risk of distraction and lack of constructive activities could make them lethargic. This can make it challenging for them to match the rigorous study required for IAS preparation later on. In contrast, Science students are accustomed to handling a vast syllabus, preparing them for the heavy workload in the future.

To dispel the myth that Arts subjects were essential for IAS preparation, RAA connected Priya’s parents to a reputable IAS coaching institute in Pune. The institute clarified that UPSC aspirants come from diverse academic backgrounds, and coaching institutes teach everything from scratch, making it possible for students from any stream to prepare confidently for civil services exams. As a result, Priya’s parents began to seriously consider Science as a career after 10th.

Sharpen the Brain with Science

Being familiar with a vast syllabus is not the only benefit of choosing Science; it contributes to neurological improvement as well.

Engaging in rigorous subjects like Mathematics and Science stimulates brain networks, enhancing cognitive abilities, including logical reasoning and analytical skills. The study by the National Library of Medicine, USA shows that “within the same society, adolescent students who specifically lack mathematical education exhibited reduced brain inhibition levels in a key brain area involved in reasoning and cognitive learning.” Choosing Science, therefore, ensures that the brain remains active and continues to develop during the teenage years. Priya’s parents were made aware of these facts and they sought our further help by making up their minds to take our counselling.

The Engineering Advantage

Priya’s parents were thinking of BA LLB as option B due to the low success rate in the UPSC exam. Statistics showed that many successful UPSC officers come from engineering backgrounds, as engineering education provides problem-solving, analytical, and logical reasoning skills crucial for civil services exams.

RAA introduced her to Shrusti and Rohan (for privacy purposes we’re using made-up names).

Shrusti (BA, LLB, LLM from NLU, Bengaluru) explained that the rigorous law school schedule wouldn’t leave Priya time to prepare for UPSC. Shrusti shared a unique perspective – if Priya had to move abroad in the future for her husband’s job. For Medical, Law, and other degrees, she would need to spend time, energy, and money to do the catch-up course in foreign countries, whereas, with an Engineering degree, she will be readily employable and avoid the frustration of sitting at home.

Rohan did BE (VIT, Pune), MBA (IIFT, Delhi), turned down campus placement from Reliance Industries and opted to prepare for UPSC. He clarified that it is a misconception that Maths doesn’t add any value in IAS preparation. During his 11th – 12th, he prepared for IIT-JEE, which helped him in many ways – good command over Maths, fighting spirit, competitive exam temperament, and knowing his potential. He also shared that many of his friends from non-science backgrounds were unable to clear UPSC prelim as they dropped Maths after 10th std.

No matter which career stream (CSAT for IAS, CAT/CET for MBA, CLAT/CET for Law, CA, or your own business) you choose, Maths will increase your chances of success and Engineering can be a worthy backup in case you drop your plan to do IAS or fail to crack the UPSC exam.

Priya’s parents recognized this trend and acknowledged the benefits of Science education.

Customizing Subject Combinations

Though our DMIT test also suggested a career towards IAS and we strongly recommended taking Science, RAA didn’t completely guide Priya’s family away from the Art stream. Rather we recommended suitable books for Political Science and Economics. This will allow her to see if she develops an interest in civil services subjects while keeping all her career options open by opting for Science.

Additionally, RAA emphasized that students can customize their subject combinations after the 12thstd., enabling them to follow their passions while ensuring a well-rounded education. Therefore, if in due course Priya happens to develop an interest in Arts or Commerce by reading those books, she will have the option in her hand to change her subjects post 12th std.

Why Science: Some Concluding Thoughts

In the 11thand 12thgrades, Mathematics, IQ, and analytical and logical abilities see significant improvement. These skills play a crucial role in excelling in competitive exams. It’s very unlikely to develop these skills later in your academic career after 12th. If you sharpen your brain then you can learn new subjects including Arts later in your life. But Arts, on the other hand, may not provide the same level of cognitive development and skill enhancement.

Also, while the UPSC exam demands management and public speaking skills, Science education doesn’t fall short. The engineering colleges have clubs such as TEDx, Toastmasters, MUN and organize a plethora of intercollegiate events that foster these essential skills.

Priya’s Case Study: A Wise Decision

Ultimately, Priya and her family embraced the wisdom of RAA’s guidance and opted for Science in the 11th std. It was a decision that not only aligned with Priya’s cognitive development but also opened doors to diverse career possibilities. It was a decision that could have been easily missed had they not sought the expertise of experienced career counsellors like RAA and explored DMIT.

Let’s Sum it Up

To conclude, choosing Science as career opportunities after 10th is not just a decision; it’s a strategic move in your future. We’re not suggesting that everyone should become a doctor or an engineer. Not at all !!

We are just saying that in 11thand 12th, Science does help a lot, no matter what you pursue in the future. It broadens your horizons, challenges your limits, and enhances your cognitive abilities. Last but not least, the significance of reliable and experienced counsellors at RAA is also worth considering. We hold expertise in the career planning of students and can chalk out the entire career pathway starting from 11th std. to your end goal.
