How To Choose a Good Coaching Institute
Whether we like it or not there is immense competition in every sector in India be it Service, Business, Education, parking space in malls, or train tickets. Hence it has become evident that we have to face the competition to sustain ourselves, but at the same time, we need to ensure we aren’t doing this at the cost of our health. Hence we need the right mentor /coach to navigate through this competition like we look for a good travel advisor to plan our vacation end-to-end.
If we have to talk about the education sector, considering no. of school holidays, typically school will be open for approx. 200 days in a year. Which is quite less and on top of that there will be several other activities or events in which school teachers remain engaged. Secondly, almost all admissions for graduation courses are through entrance exams, but in school, they don’t cover the entrance exam syllabus. That’s where coaching institutes come to the rescue for students. They give the students good training and make sure that they score well. A good coaching center would always be able to give attention to each of its students. Some institutes with qualified and visionary management provide career guidance and prepare a complete career path for them.
We agree that there are so many coaching institutes or eLearning companies, which makes it difficult for parents to select the right one. Well don’t worry, this article will put across different dimensions, which are ignored by many parents when choosing the best coaching institute for their ward.
1. Faculty
As everyone’s main focus is to get a quality education, the first thing you have to examine is the faculty of an institute, their qualification, their past experience, the result they have produced, whether they are approachable or not, and whether they are good listener, and of course their way of teaching.
Usually, many parents opt for Demo classes, but you know in 1 or 2 lectures you can’t gauge all the faculties and services the institute will provide throughout the year. To give you an analogy, in arrange marriage, you take a decision after 1-2 meetings, but actual compatibility you will come to know after marriage. Hence, our suggestions would be to talk to the existing students of the class or check Google reviews or visit personally and then decide.
2. Results
Performance is the showcase of an institute but to a certain extent. It may happen that you took admission in a class by seeing their past result (your might have read Mutual Fund disclaimer – past return doesn’t guarantee future return) or results from their Main branch or faculty who produced the result has left the class. Hence, the result produced by the faculty is more important than the result produced by the class or the brand image of the class.
What if the institute is new? Even in that case, you see the performance of their faculty such as where they had taught before and their educational background. There are high chances that in a new institute with qualified management and teachers, you will see better performance improvement compare to a class that produced toppers. Our suggestion will be to visit the class and ask for performance improvement cases and the number of drop-outs from the institute. If faculties are good, the institute is paying individual attention and as a parent, you are keeping watch on the progress of your child then it is guaranteed that your ward will do really well in the study.
3. Location
For the location, it is suggested that if the institution is good then the location should be given less weightage. You can’t expect to lose weight without exercising; similarly, you would need to get out of the comfort of your house/area if you are expecting a better result. However, if you are facing problems with transport then ask the institute if they provide a van facility or if you have to get easy access to public transport. You should also look for safety in that particular area.
4. One-stop solution
You should also see what other facilities an institute is providing like course material, video lectures, test series, coaching for all subjects you want to enroll in, workshops & seminars for personality development, career counseling, parenting, paper writing techniques, how to get rid of social media distraction, etc.
This will reduce commute time as well as the hassle to manage the schedule of different classes.
5. Infrastructure
When we talk about the infrastructure the first thing you should check is where the institute is located, whether it is in a commercial or a residential set-up, as it is illegal to run commercial ventures in residential buildings. The good ambiance of the institute plays an important role in creating a learning environment for your ward.
You can look over the building, the availability of a firefighting system in the building, separate washrooms for boys and girls, parking space, security guard, cameras in classrooms and entrance, size of the classrooms, seating arrangement & its comfort.
6. Management
This is a commonly ignored aspect. As we understood that faculty is the key to producing the result, but management is the one who appoints the faculty. Hence management background and vision are most crucial. Check if management is in for providing quality education or cutting corners and making some quick money. You should also look if the institute is into a franchise model or part of a large chain, in that case, most of the management time will go into operational activities and they can hardly give time for academics. Management should be well qualified as they are playing an important role in molding and developing tomorrow’s future.
Many parents make a mistake by calling the institute for course fees and then shortlisting the class for visit. By this approach, you may end up dropping a good class from your list. Remember you are shelling out extra money to get the best quality, but if you compromise on quality due to fees then whatever you are paying at a bargain place, you are wasting that money.
If I have to sum it up then give weightage to different aspects in the following order – Management, Faculty, Individual attention, Result, Location, Infrastructure, and One stop shop. Visit the class, meet the institute’s team, check the vibes there, check out the type of students (family background) who come for the class, and remember all the above points.
