Know The Difference Between JEE Main Marks vs Percentile vs Rank
It’s not very uncommon that many students remain doubtful about the complex marking system of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Understanding the marking scheme can help you in many ways: from crafting your approach strategy to analyzing your paper. If you are targeting JEE, you need to know the difference between marks vs percentile JEE mains.
Therefore, in this article, we’ll discuss the difference between these three terms: marks, percentile, and rank.
JEE Percentile Explained
It is vital to understand that the JEE Mains test score is provided in percentile format. The JEE main percentile is not the actual score of the students, but rather the normalized score of those who took the test. Many students search for “JEE classes near me” in order to get these complexities cleared. But, it’s not that intricate after all.
The JEE Main percentile score is used to measure the relative performance of applicants who have taken an examination. It represents the proportion of applicants who earned the same or lower marks in that specific test session in JEE. For instance, if a score falls in the 70th percentile, 70% of all scores recorded are lower than yours, and the topper receives the highest score in the exam.
Note that percentile differs from percentage and so differs from the candidate’s raw score. According to NTA standards, the percentile of the overall score is not an aggregate or average of the percentiles of specific topics in the exam.
The JEE Mains test is held in two sessions and in separate months, which might cause variances in the exam’s difficulty level. To prevent this from happening, normalized marks are acceptable. The normalized scores are not real marks, but rather a comparison score derived using the NTA algorithm.

JEE Mains Marking Scheme
The JEE exam pattern aids applicants in understanding the exam’s format, total marks for JEE Main, number of sections, negative marking policy, and passing score requirements, among other things.
As you already know, your test will be based on three subjects: physics, chemistry, and mathematics. You’ll get to see 30 questions from each section which ultimately makes a total of 90 questions for the whole paper. Out of 30 questions from each section, you need to answer 25 questions. Hence, in total, you’ll have to attempt 75 questions for the whole paper. For each correct answer, you’ll be awarded 4 marks, while with each incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted. Therefore, the whole paper is of 300 (75*4) marks.
With the common issues being addressed, now let us see JEE main marks vs percentile vs rank.
